Bayern Munich have opened talks with Newcastle United over a potential summer move for Anthony Gordon, Sky Sports reported on Thursday.
The discussions are at a preliminary stage, with no formal bid yet submitted. Sky Sports’ Keith Downie reported that Newcastle value Gordon significantly higher than the figures currently being discussed between the two clubs, with the England international under contract at St James’ Park until June 2028. Gordon, 24, signed that extension last October after a move to Liverpool collapsed in the final days of the previous summer window.
Downie broke the news on Sky Sports’ transfer centre at 14:35 BST. Florian Plettenberg of Sky Germany corroborated shortly after, reporting that Bayern view Gordon as a primary left-wing target under Vincent Kompany and that initial contact was made earlier this week. No other Tier 1 source has confirmed the story at this stage.
The talks place Newcastle’s ownership group, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, in a position they have largely avoided since their October 2021 takeover: deciding whether to sell a senior player to ease Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) pressure. Newcastle posted a loss of £73.4m in their most recently filed accounts and were forced into deadline-day sales of Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson last June to remain compliant. Gordon was briefly offered to Liverpool in that same window before the club pulled back.
Gordon scored 11 goals and registered 10 assists across all competitions in 2024/25. He has 13 senior England caps and started two matches at Euro 2024.
Bayern are expected to formalise their interest with a written offer in the coming weeks. The key figure to watch is whether Newcastle set a valuation that reflects Gordon’s status as a homegrown, contracted England international, or whether PSR deadlines force a negotiation on Bayern’s terms.
