John Stones will leave Manchester City as a free agent this summer, with Juventus in formal talks over a two-year contract, Transfermarkt reported on Monday, ending a decade-long stay at the Etihad.T2, Transfermarkt
The Italian club’s offer is built around a two-year deal with an option for a third, on a free transfer when the 31-year-old’s City contract expires on 30 June.T2, Transfermarkt Wage figures have not been disclosed by any reporting outlet, and no signing-on fee has been confirmed.
Transfermarkt carried the talks first on Monday morning, citing multiple sources in Italy and England. The outlet reported that personal terms are advanced rather than agreed, with structure around the option year still to be resolved. No Tier-1 corroboration from Fabrizio Romano or David Ornstein has followed at time of publication, and Sky Italia have not yet matched the story.
Stones, capped 82 times by England, joined City from Everton in 2016 for a fee then reported at £47.5m. His decade in Manchester yielded six Premier League titles, an FA Cup, four League Cups and the 2023 Champions League. Persistent muscular and foot problems since 2024 have restricted his availability, and his minutes under Pep Guardiola this season have been limited to rotation appearances behind Rúben Dias, Manuel Akanji and Josko Gvardiol.
Guardiola has not publicly addressed the move beyond acknowledging, in a pre-match press conference last week, that the defender had settled personal terms “in principle” with another club. City have not issued a farewell statement and are not expected to until the contract formally lapses.
For Juventus, the approach fits a summer rebuild under sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli, who has prioritised Premier League experience on free or low-fee deals. Stones would slot alongside Bremer and Federico Gatti in Igor Tudor’s back line, with Daniele Rugani’s contract situation also unresolved.
Still open: Tier-1 confirmation of agreed terms, a medical date, and whether a third club enters late. Stones is contracted to City until 30 June and remains available for selection through the season’s final fixtures.
