SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, holds 70,000 people under a translucent roof that diffuses the California light. It hosts Paraguay against the United States on 13 June, then the United States against Türkiye on 26 June. Two of the three most consequential group-stage fixtures for the host nation happen in the same building.

Group D is the group where the United States’ World Cup begins.

The teams

The United States (FIFA rank: 16) are the co-host that carries the most pressure of the three. Christian Pulisic plays in Italy at Serie A level. Tyler Adams controls from central midfield with composure built across European clubs. Weston McKennie brings experience from Germany and Italy. Folarin Balogun and Timothy Weah provide pace in the attacking positions. The United States opens against Paraguay on 13 June; the final group match against Türkiye on 26 June at SoFi Stadium may determine who finishes first.

Türkiye (FIFA rank: 22) arrive at this tournament as one of the more dangerous sides in the group. They reached the quarter-finals of Euro 2024, where their football drew genuine attention from European observers who had underestimated them going in. Hakan Çalhanoglu, the Inter Milan midfielder, is the organisational intelligence of this squad. Arda Güler, the Real Madrid attacking midfielder, is 20 years old and one of the most naturally gifted players at this tournament. Kerem Aktürkoglu and Yunus Akgün provide attacking width. Türkiye’s opening fixture is against Australia on 14 June at BC Place in Vancouver; their closing match against the United States on 26 June at SoFi Stadium is the one that shapes the final group table.

Paraguay (FIFA rank: 40) are a South American side with a disciplined defensive structure. Gustavo Gómez anchors their defence. Miguel Almirón, who plays for Newcastle United, organises their attacking intent; his Premier League experience makes him capable of producing sustained pressure at this level. Julio Enciso, with Brighton experience, is the younger midfielder alongside him. Paraguay opens at SoFi Stadium and finishes at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara.

Australia (FIFA rank: 27) reached the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Mathew Ryan, the goalkeeper, is their first line of organisation. Jackson Irvine controls the central midfield. Mathew Leckie is their most experienced attacking presence. Australia open against Türkiye on 14 June in Vancouver.

Paraguay vs Türkiye: 20 June, Levi’s Stadium, Santa Clara. Australia vs Paraguay: 26 June, Levi’s Stadium, Santa Clara (simultaneous kick-off). Who advances

The United States and Türkiye are the two sides most likely to take the automatic qualifying positions, but the 26 June match between them may settle the final order rather than the fact of progression. Paraguay are capable of taking points from either; Almirón in form is the kind of player who makes conservative group-stage predictions look careless.

Australia’s path runs through the third-place bracket. A win against Paraguay and a draw from one of the stronger fixtures gives them a tally competitive among the best eight third-placed teams across twelve groups.

Türkiye’s tournament temperament, established in Euro 2024, makes them the group’s most interesting side. They do not lose games in the manner of teams that have accepted their limitations. The United States carries a different kind of pressure: to progress in a manner that convinces the domestic audience that this tournament, on home soil, is a moment football deserves. Whether the football matches the occasion begins being answered on 13 June at SoFi Stadium.
