A new first knockout round

The Round of 32 is a structural addition for 2026, replacing what was previously the Round of 16 as the first knockout stage. With 32 qualifiers from the group stage (24 group winners and runners-up, plus 8 third-placed teams), a first knockout round of 16 matches is needed before the field reaches 16, then 8, then 4.

Who enters the Round of 32

Total: 32 teams. These are paired into 16 matches, and all 16 winners advance to the Round of 16.

Bracket paths and third-place allocation

Group winners and runners-up are placed in the bracket based on their group. In principle, group winners face opponents from the opposing half of the bracket to keep the strongest sides apart until later rounds.

Third-placed teams are allocated to specific Round of 32 slots based on which groups produce the best eight third-placed qualifiers. FIFA published the full allocation matrix in the official regulations covering all 495 possible combinations of which 8 of 12 third-placed teams advance. In practice, the specific opponents for third-placed teams are not known until the group stage concludes and the eight qualifying thirds are identified. MercatoWire will publish the confirmed bracket as soon as groups are complete.
