Best 8 of 12
With 12 groups, 12 teams finish third. Eight of them advance to the Round of 32. The eight are selected by ranking all 12 third-placed teams against each other using the following criteria in order (per Article 13 of the official FIFA World Cup 2026 Regulations):
| Step | Criterion |
|---|---|
| 1 | Points obtained in all group matches |
| 2 | Goal difference in all group matches |
| 3 | Goals scored in all group matches |
| 4 | Team conduct score (fair-play points, same card deductions as group tiebreakers) |
| 5 | Most recent published FIFA/Coca-Cola Men's World Ranking; earlier editions applied in sequence if needed |
There is no head-to-head step in this ranking: the third-placed teams played in different groups and never faced each other.
Which four third-placed teams are eliminated
The four worst-ranked of the 12 third-placed teams are eliminated at the group stage. A team that wins one match and draws one while conceding several goals may finish third comfortably within its group but still miss out if the cross-group ranking places it outside the top eight.
