Best 8 of 12

With 12 groups, 12 teams finish third. Eight of them advance to the Round of 32. The eight are selected by ranking all 12 third-placed teams against each other using the following criteria in order (per Article 13 of the official FIFA World Cup 2026 Regulations):

Third-place team ranking criteria (Article 13, FIFA Regulations)
StepCriterion
1Points obtained in all group matches
2Goal difference in all group matches
3Goals scored in all group matches
4Team conduct score (fair-play points, same card deductions as group tiebreakers)
5Most recent published FIFA/Coca-Cola Men's World Ranking; earlier editions applied in sequence if needed

There is no head-to-head step in this ranking: the third-placed teams played in different groups and never faced each other.

Which four third-placed teams are eliminated

The four worst-ranked of the 12 third-placed teams are eliminated at the group stage. A team that wins one match and draws one while conceding several goals may finish third comfortably within its group but still miss out if the cross-group ranking places it outside the top eight.
